Tooth colored natural looking fillings
Composite fillings are tooth colored fillings that are directly placed in the tooth after removing decay. Silver amalgam fillings tend to last longer, but silver fillings can cause dark staining. So composite fillings can be better in many cases.
Over the past 2 decades people have been requesting aesthetic tooth colored or metal free fillings. This has led to the development of special “adhesive” tooth colored restorations using tooth-like materials such as composite resins and porcelains that are both safe and predictable. These techniques are also suitable for children and incorporate fluoride to reduce cavities.
A properly restored tooth functions and wears normally and looks indistinguishable from a natural tooth.
Porcelains are a ceramic, non-metallic material created by the action of heat and come in many shades. They can be developed to look like natural tooth enamel - the outer hard shell covering (the crown) of a tooth. These tooth colored adhesive restorations consist of dental composite resins or 'plastic' and 'fillers' made of silica, a form of glass. The fillers give the composites wear resistance and translucency.
