Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry helps reduce the patient anxiety and fear associated with some dental treatments. It involves the use of sedatives to calm the patient.

The three types of conscious sedation dentistry are as follows:

1.         Oral Sedation - This involves taking a tablet sedative usually an hour before your dental visit. If you have taken an oral sedative, you should not drive for about 24 hours after your appointment. Depending on your level of anxiety, your doctor may also prescribe an additional dose to be taken an hour before bedtime

2.         Conscious Intravenous Sedation - This type of sedative is administered by injection. It works quickly, making the patient drowsy and ensures the patient feels no pain during a dental procedure. Intravenous sedation is preferred over anesthesia and recommended for patients with diabetes, heart-related ailments, and children with special medical cases. This type of sedative allows patients to breathe easily.

3.         Inhalation Sedation - Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas is the most common type of inhalation sedation used in dentistry. It produces a euphoric feeling when inhaled, making the patient feel elated and happy. It is fast acting and leaves the body quickly also.
